The fourth Night of the Outreach

The sun was setting, bathing Manokwari in a soft light of warmth and beauty as I looked from my bedroom window over the city. “You kept the deal Lord”, I said with a smile. “We indeed had no rain during this outreach in the evenings, although it often poured down during the day”. This was the fourth and final night of the evangelistic outreach in Manokwari.

Soon, 18,000 people gathered on the campaign grounds for the final meeting of our outreach. Joy filled the place as people danced, sang, and just worshipped God. It is not often that you see a “drama team” in Papua, but last night, young people displayed graphically the story of Manokwari and the life in Papua 150 years ago when the two German missionaries, Ottwan and Geissler, arrived on this very island bringing the Gospel of Jesus for the first time to this remote and uncivilised people. It was so powerful that I decided to use that theme as the very entrance of my sermon.

After the message, thousands stood up to commit their lives to Jesus, but I was not satisfied with such a response, and again I had to ask the people to sit down, as I explained the depth, commitment, and consequences of their decision. I stressed the point that it is much more than just standing and praying the prayer of salvation – it is commitment, a walk with God where there is no room for compromise. Thousands stood up again, fully understanding the seriousness of their commitment.

Just as I was about to pray for the sick, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart. “Wait and change”. So often, preachers like us just follow a pattern instead of waiting on God for His way. Then I knew what to do. I had all the people sit down, and then called out the sicknesses. Many from within the crowd stood as I called out their sickness.7.Mai Once I had prayed, we went back into worship until I heard from God what other sickness I was to call out. Wave after wave of healing and prayer flowed. Faith was rising like a wave, as people felt that their need was dealt with. I moved from the stage to be amongst the people, and all the time, the cameras projected the scene onto the large screens on either side of the stage.

The intensity of the people watching the event was almost tangible. Some were seated on their small motorbikes, others in their cars, yet their eyes were glued to the screens in fascination at seeing what the Lord was doing in their midst.

Then it was celebration time! It was like the roaring of many waters as 18,000 people roared and shouted their hallelujahs to God. They were jumping and singing all over the place, and joy, joy unspeakable was apparent because the hearts of men had been made right with their Maker.

The atmosphere was electrified. Healings were taking place as the people worshipped and danced! The angels also were rejoicing over the souls that were saved and 18,000 people joined in as heaven earth gave thanks before Almighty God.

The closing of the Gospel outreach was like the crescendo of a symphony, as we all sang the song of the redeemed:

You are worthy to take the scroll, and open its seals. For You were slain and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation…

The third Night of the Outreach

Who can describe what happened here tonight? I stood on the stage and struggled to breathe, my right side was aching, and every movement was pure agony. Two hours previously, I had slipped and fallen in my bathroom. I cracked some ribs and injured the leg that had been operated on. With a struggle, I managed to get dressed; indeed, I had to get dressed in order to go to the third night of the evangelistic outreach.

Not knowing how I was going to manage that meeting, I remained in my car once we had reached the campaign grounds, and I prayed – oh, how I prayed. I just wanted to go home and lie down, but I knew that I had a responsibility towards the 12,000 plus crowd that had already gathered for the meeting.

Desperately, I cried to the Lord for help! I had a battle raging inside me – was I just woman that wanted to go home and take care of her wounds, or was I a warrior that had to take that meeting? Had it depended6.Mai upon me, I would have gone back and rested, but, as I looked at the team surrounding my car, simply praying and beseeching Almighty God for me, and yet not disturbing my solitude, as I had clearly stated that I needed to be alone, I knew I had an important decision to make.

I cannot say that God touched me, but I can say that the love of the team carried me, and I made that decision – “No matter what, I will preach at this meeting”!

On stage, the meeting was proceeding as if nothing had happened. The team dutifully continued with their tasks, but they were never too far away, just in case I needed them. I think that this is what Psalm 133 is all about – when brethren dwell in unity. They rose in faith like one man, everyone covering my pain and weakness in prayer. Behind me, our supporters and co-preachers prayed continuously. The intercessors respectfully kept their distance yet never ceased praying. The team members kept coming close to ensure that I was managing and did not need anything.

It was then that the warrior in me arose. “Satan, you will pay for this. You will pay in souls”. I took the microphone, and determinedly took the meeting back into worship. Then, with all that was within me, I preached, I moved, I breathed. At one point, I panicked, as I could not get my breath, but suddenly, something changed and I could breathe freely. Moving my arm was also very painful, but even that I moved with determination.

The Word of God cut like a knife and a deep conviction came upon the people. It was as if heaven invaded earth with its holiness and love, and it felt as if the very presence of God descended upon the people. Some wept, others knelt down, and yet others simply stood in awe. I deeply and gratefully thanked the Lord from the bottom of my heart for the battle won, for although we are weak, He is strong.

I passed the microphone over to Evangelist Robinson, who took over praying for the sick, whilst I left the meeting, and returned home to rest. To my surprise, the swelling on my leg had gone, and, waking up the next morning, I found that I was bruised, but the pain had gone! Jesus had healed me whilst I slept – wonderful Saviour, compassionate Father, eternal Healer, Immanuel.

The second Night of the Outreach

The Psalmist wrote: “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God” (Psalm 46:4). That is how I would describe Manokwari last night. Joy – Joy unspeakable seemed to flow through the crowd. It was as if a river of salvation, with its streams of healing and pure joy in the Lord kept flooding over the land and people. The skies were clear, the air warm and the hearts of the people were open for the Gospel of Jesus.

12,000 people listened attentively to the Word of the Lord. Some sat on the ground; others stood, whilst others simply remained in their cars, which were parked around the grounds. The atmosphere was filled with expectation, and the Lord that gave His life for them was not going to disappoint them. At least 10,000 responded to the call of salvation. crowdI made them sit again and explained the significance of that call once again, in order to make crystal clear the importance, the commitment that it brings, and the responsibility to follow Jesus with their entire life! Oh, this is not just raising a hand; no, this is a commitment with blessing and consequences! 10,000 stood up again, even after I made that call so clear and stressed the point of responsibility of such a commitment.

Then He who saved their souls also touched their bodies! Healings flowed like a river! The people followed the healings with great interest as the camera crew projected it onto the large screens on each side of the stage. At first, I had a word of knowledge about a young man with a dislocated shoulder who was suddenly healed. A young man came forward in order to testify concerning his healing. He had been involved in martial arts, and had been kicked in the shoulder. Not only was his shoulder dislocated, but, for over one year, he had been in great pain, as his shoulder never seemed to heal. Suddenly, during the preaching, the pain disappeared and he was able to move his arm and shoulder without any pain or discomfort.

One woman with severe kidney problems told her family, “Just take me to that evangelistic outreach, and I will be healed”. According to her faith, so it was – she walked back home healed

One asthmatic young man told me that he could hardly breathe when he came to the grounds, so I sent him running around the same grounds. He gave one look at me and took off. He returned with a beaming face – healed, excited, and thankful.

One young girl wept tears of gratitude, as the pain in her left breast (a tumour) had disappeared.

One man, belonging to the fire brigade, told us excitedly that he had come really early to the campaign grounds, because he had such back problems and was in so much pain. Indeed, He could hardly wait for the meeting to start. “I wanted them to hurry up and start the meeting so that I could be healed”, he told to crowd with excitement. “Now I am healed, and all my pain has gone!” To prove his point, he bent and moved and swung his body – he was truly healed!

And the so the line continued, as one after the other told their story of joy.

However, we also have other speakers here who speak during the seminars. Evangelist Robinson is a powerful man, and, in order to show the people that we work as a team, and that it is not just Suzette who flows in the power of God, I gave the microphone to him. He moved with amazing faith, and soon blind eyes saw, and deaf ears heard, whilst some of the team and I went to the side to pray for the cripples. Joy filled the grounds; people were shouting with sheer delight as they witnessed God moving and healing the sick. Although it was already late at night, the people did not want to go home. They danced and danced all around the grounds, celebrating the goodness of their God, Jesus Christ.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God. That joy can only be in Jesus Christ our Lord and saviour. It is then that the joy of the lord is our strength.

4th May 2011

The first Night of the Outreach

The sound of 121raindrops drew me to my window. It was as if I could hear the voice of Pak Paul saying, “The weather report says it will rain”. From deep within, I cried unto the Lord, “Lord, we need clear weather for the people to be able to attend this open-air meeting”. It was still softly raining when we went to the crusade field.

The local Papuan dancers met me at my arrival. They were going to usher me onto the stage. I looked at all those present – they could hardly be called a crowd, but I knew that it was early, and, as many people were still working, and Papua is well-known for its late meetings, I felt re-assured that all would be well. By the end of the evening, approximately 5,000 had gathered on the field!

Transport in this area is very difficult, and so we have hired 15 buses to bring people from the outlying areas to the meetings. Some pastors, who have to travel a long way, have had accommodation provided in the city, so that they can become part of the event itself.

During the evening, as the crowd listened to the Word of God with great attention, the sky cleared and the rain stopped – glory to God.

After the preaching of the Word, at least 3,000 hands were raised as a sign from their side that they want to 2commit their lives to Jesus. Some were already Christians, but had grown cold in their faith and others were first time decisions. Soon, the miracles started flowing. Just to mention a few:

1. For one young man, who had fallen off his motorcycle and lived in pain for the past three months, life will never be the same again. God healed him during the preaching.

2. With shining eyes, a young lady told me that she could not bend, as her spine had been injured. With great joy and dexterity, she demonstrated what the Lord had done for her.

3. Another told about chest pains that had gone; a severe three-day migraine instantly relieved. A little girl told us how, as she sat with her mother, a pain behind her ears disappeared.

There are far too many healings and miracles to report, but all the Glory goes unto Jesus who has started to shake Manokwari by His Spirit.

Visiting the Island

Visiting the island where the two German missionaries Ottwan and Geissler landed - what a wonderful memorable day!

The Last Prayer Night

As I stood at the monument to the Dutch missionaries who were killed whilst preaching in Manokwari, I was moved deeply. What was their last prayer? Was it for their safety; was it for the salvation of the city, or was it for the whole of Papua? We do not know, but the Lord certainly does, and the thought crossed my mind, “Are we the part of the answer to the prayer?”

As we travelled through the city, my heart was again deeply moved. This is the city that they call ‘Jerusalem’, and in many ways it is like the Jerusalem that Nehemiah visited – with its gates burned and its wall broken down.

Oh, Manokwari is filled with churches and meetings, but there is virtually no prayer altar. No prayer tower or prayer mountain can be found here. Indeed, it was even hard to find the city intercessors, and when we did find those who called themselves intercessors, they were rather arrogant, scattered, and divided.

This was the setting for our first early Morning Prayer meeting. As I reported, only a few turned up for that first meeting, but the crowd rapidly grew morning after morning in order to worship and pray for their city and for Papua.

However, the night meetings were not as well attended as we had hoped for. Nevertheless, night after night, around six to seven hundred people came to pray with us.

But last night, the Spirit of God suddenly moved upon me in power. I stopped the worship and forcibly addressed the people. It cut like a knife in the spirit realm, and soon, hundreds streamed forward weeping and wailing before the Lord for their city and their lack of commitment.

We agreed to start a prayer tower – and as it turned out, the Principal of the Baptist seminary had already started a small one, after the Lord had spoken to him some 16 years ago to start such a project.

I have decided to separate myself unto the Lord for two days in order to seek His face concerning this city that has lost its fire and calling. May God restore the passion, vision, and purpose to this city that calls itself the ‘Bible City’, and restore to it that fire, fervour, and resolve that it had over 150 years ago.

Blessings

Suzette

Manokwari Prayer Conference

Manokwari, the ‘Bible City’ of Papua, is the capital of the province of West Papua. It was here, in 1855, that the Word of the Lord was brought by two German missionaries, an event which is celebrated every year on 05 February as Gospel Landing Day. From Manokwari the gospel of Jesus flooded Papua and turned the people into a nation of Christians by the hundreds and thousands.

22

The dancers moved me deeply as they symbolically showed what Papua was like before civilization. Then came the fire and light of the Gospel and the dancers lit their fires in that fire. It was so wonderful, I just wept and wept. We are believing God for this city – please pray with us...

Early morning prayer meetings

In the early hours of the morning, we arrived at the site where we are to hold our Gospel Outreach meetings, in order to pray and intercede for the whole event. The first morning, (29 April), there was only a handful of people present, but where two or three are gathered in my name, says the Lord, there I am in the midst of them. And indeed, He was; there was such a spirit of prayer and travail present amongst us.

On the second day, over two hundred people turned up on their little mopeds or by foot, and poured out their hearts in prayer and supplication, whilst the rest of the city slept. What a glorious morning we had, as, in between dark and dawn with the stars still twinkling overhead, our blessed Saviour was adored and worshipped. Two hundred souls knelt before the Lord weeping and crying out for the lost and in repentance for having allowed the fire and passion that were present some one and a half centuries ago to fade and die. They begged forgiveness for their coldness, and for a restoration of the years that the locust had eaten (Joel 2:25).

It is these faithful prayers, poured out in heartfelt sorrow and contrition that changes the spiritual atmosphere of a city and even a nation.
